FIRST IN DENMARK: AGF SIGNS UN CLIMATE CHANGE INITATIVE
06.05.2021 17:58
As the first sports club in Denmark, AGF has joined the global fight against climate change by signing the UN Sports for Climate Action framework; the initiative brings together sports clubs, federations, and athletes from around the world to join the fight for a global green transition.
AGF joins the likes of Juventus, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, VfL Wolfsburg and several other clubs from around the world that support the UN climate initiative. The framework also has the backing of federations such as UEFA, the IOC and FIFA.
- Sport has a huge impact on a global level - and especially football can bring people together both locally and across the world. We believe that we as a football club have a unique position, touching and inspiring so many people, and therefore we also have a special responsibility to use this position to create positive change. We are proud to be the first in Denmark to sign the framework, says director of branding and sustainability at AGF, Anne Jensen.
Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, Sports for Climate Action lead at the UN Climate Change, added: “We welcome AGF’s commitment to UNFCCC Sport for Climate Action. No club can solve problems of the scale of climate change by itself, but to achieve global climate goals, we all must do our part to create a net zero future. By joining Sports for Climate Action, AGF commit to doing its part and we hope that many other football clubs in Denmark will follow suit.”
Five principles
The framework is linked to the Paris Agreement and its five main principles are:
- Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility;
- Reduce overall climate impact;
- Educate for climate action;
- Promote sustainable and responsible consumption;
- Advocate for climate action through communication.
- These are strong principles that we at AGF already work with and include in our sustainability strategy. Thus, the signing of the UN's Sports for Climate Action is an important next step for us, committing ourselves not just to continue to push further, but also to inspire others - inside and outside the world of sports - to make a difference.
- With the participation in the UN framework, we join forces with rather prominent football clubs around the world that also work with sustainability, so there is a lot of international inspiration to be found, too, says Anne Jensen, who - together with the chair of the board at AGF A/S, Lars Fournais - signed the letter of commitment, in which AGF gives its official support to the UN's Sports for Climate Action framework.
- I am very pleased to be able to confirm AGF's support for the UN's Sports for Climate Action initiative. With our signature, we emphasize how we take responsibility locally and globally, and that we also want to use our platform to create a positive change, together with our fans, sponsors and others around the club, says Lars Fournais.
Facts
The UN Sports for Climate Action Framework was launched by the global sports community and the UN Climate Change Initiative (UNFCCC) at the COP24 conference in Katowice in December 2018. The initiative seeks to bring sports organizations, fans, athletes and teams together to create awareness and action to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
